With a history of over 57 years, the ISM and ISO certified shipping company is one of the most experienced and biggest shipping companies in the Netherlands. While the company originally focused on refrigerated cargo, it has expanded its ship owning and ship management activities to include a variety of cargoes. The fleet comprises specialized reefer vessels and container vessels. The company is the worldwide market leader in the reefer shipping industry and size and services continue to grow.
A devoted team of 90 employees takes care of the technical and crew management of a total of 110 vessels, (partly) owned or under management. Supporting services include the coordination of new buildings as well as conversion and inspections. The company has its head office in the Northern part of the Netherlands and offices in Germany, Italy, the USA and the Philippines.
As far as most vessels are concerned, cargo brokerage and operations are handled by an affiliated organization abroad. The reefer vessels in ownership or management form part of a pool of 150 reefer vessels, the majority of which are owned by third parties. The cargo brokerage office is supported by commercial representatives in the Netherlands, the UK, Russia, the U.S., the Far East and South America.
As shown in the company’s organization chart, under the Management Team resort the following departments: Technical Department, New building, Certification, Crew Management (1,500 crew), Accounting, Operations, ICT, HR, Quality Assurance, Legal, Insurance & Claims, Purchasing -including procurement and logistics- and Secretariat.
The Technical Department is responsible for keeping the vessels in reliable and good condition in the most economical and efficient way. The department is managed by a Technical Director, supported by a Manager Technical Department with 4 Fleet Managers of which 1 is stationed in Italy. Each Fleet Manager supervises a number of Fleet Superintendents who are each responsible for some 5 vessels. The Fleet Superintendents are responsible for initiating, planning and supervising all maintenance & repairs, inspections, dockings, and related budgetting for the vessels. Furthermore they monotor surveys, certification, procurement for the assigned vessels in co-operation with the responsible departments. On average, they travel some 35% of their time. Working time during weekends is compensated based on 50% time-for-time plus 50% payment.
Hands-on management, customer focus, short communication lines and straightforward communication characterize the company’s culture. Each staff member bears responsibility for and is able to exert influence on the companies’ major goal: supplying high quality and profit generating service through reliable and economic operation of its vessels.
